Hospitality was awesome...especially the owner Mr Arun Kumar Mallick is a gem of a person, he understands the problems of a traveller. More over the guest house is centrally located walking distance from park street very near to AC market. Loved it will stay in aster guest house every time i visit kolkata.

I was in an unplanned visit to Kolkata and had just booked a room here on last minutes. Boy, was i awaiting a surprise at this budget. My meetings were supposed to be held nearby to this place. Rooms were fully furnished, well planned and more importantly hygiene maintained. Had also tried their food once, was average. They even helped me with getting cabs for both pick and drop.

The main attraction of Aster Guest House is the location that is its close to park street and you have access to nearby street food, eateries, shopping street etc.We were friends group and booked through Oyo rooms. The hotel surroundings are not clean and is shabby. The room ,bathroom and reception area also does not meet expectation of a standard hotel or guest house. This is a budget place and recommended for quick travelers and tourist who is going to spend less time in hotel :-) and not recommended for families.

I went in expecting very little, and got a little less. It's quite obviously a budget guest house, but I think at ₹2700, I paid a lot more than would've been expected for a place like this. Given the location, a cost of ₹1.5 might have been justified. I had to attend an event at The Astor, which is two buildings down from Nagaland house - the entrance of which is bang opposite the alley that leads to the entrance for this place. A quick ride up in a rickety lift that needed a few taps at the second button from the bottom (there's no labelling on them) to reach the guest house. The intense smell of burning mustard oil hit me as soon as I stepped in (at about 1pm - they were probably cooking their lunch in the open kitchen next to the lobby). The friendly chap behind the counter walked me to my room (202), informed me that I'd need to let him know 10 minutes before I wanted hot water so he could switch the geyser on. He also asked if I wanted mineral water or Aquaguard water - and told me mineral water would be chargeable. The room itself looked like an aged version of the pictures I'd seen here. The mattresses felt like slightly soft board, and the pillows were of the partially-stuffed-almost-existent variety. The AC compressor kicks in with a loud grunt. The bathroom had a couple of tiny roaches running around near the sink, so I kept my toiletries in the room. Halfway through my shower, the water stopped... completely... no hot. no cold. I dried off and stepped out to all why the water had stopped and heard the sound of water flowing from inside the open room next door. When I told the man at the reception (I've forgotten his name now) that there was no water he sounded quite confused, but when I told them about the sound of water flowing, someone quickly ran into that room and stopped whatever was running - which got my water back. After cleaning up, I went across the road to The Astor, but got back to this place just after midnight... and the gate to the alley leading to the entrance had been locked. My phone battery had died, so I couldn't try calling and had to jump over the gate - which has some pretty sharp spikes that I've verified can pierce through shoe leather. I had to wake the guys up to get through the door. I told them I'd be checking out early in the morning and went to sleep. I woke them up in the morning to switch on my geyser, managed to finish my shower before the water stopped (yep... hot and cold), used the bottled water to brush my teeth and got out of there. At least the check-in and check-out process were easy and quick. Never again will I trust an Oyo.
