  • The best hotel of our trip

It's situated in a calm zone. Rooms are on second/third floor so the noise of horn is acceptable. The staff is really nice and helpful. We ordered a breakfast and it was really good. I completely recommend Cecil hotel.

I had a lengthy but enjoyable Indian Railways sleeper 2A class trip to get to Hotel Cecil, including being shouted out by a belligerent, incompetent taxi driver - no wonder Uber gains so much business - on a short ride from Howrah railway station. The hotel is down a laneway next to Food Station. It is a heritage building, hence no lift, with 21 rooms of which seven are occupied by medical students. My room rate of about Rs, 2800 for a Queen bedded room with a very comfortable bed that had quality linen and soft, dreamy pillows was good value considering this is a megacity. I was warmly welcomed by day staff member Vijay, whose English was excellent. He was informative and friendly, and gave me immediate access before 0900 to my room 104. It was a total of five sets of stairs from the street. The security man was helpful and most pleasant. The hotel was renovated three years ago. It was a first class job. Even the stairs look impressive. My room had superb, quiet split system aircon, a desk, old style mirror and chair, plus a wardrobe. A kettle, tea and coffee was provided as were shampoo sachets, a generous tube of toothpaste - rare in hotels - and two toothbrushes. The bathroom shower was designed to drain away over the whole of the floor. This is not my preferred arrangement but it worked. Water was not hot enough for my liking, but the towel was clean and a reasonable size. Lighting was good and with only occasional dropouts, WiFi was fast and pretty good. One could open the balcony doors and stand iut there admiring the famous Calcutta trams on which I travelled at Rs. 6 a shot. Curtains did their job. Traffic noise dropped off by 2030 hours. The room lacked a safe and fridge. Adding these would further improve guest experiences, The flatscreen television was miniature. I avoid street food. I could not find a nearby 7-11 or Western fast food outlet. Most local shops sold books or sanitaryware. My tariff did not include breakfast but the soft drink I ordered was reasonably priced. The quality staff including a pleasant manager and the good renovation makes this hotel a good choice, especially given the Queen bed was nit two singles oushed together.
  • An excellent stay in a building with old world charm

We stayed there for its vicinity of Medical College. Surrounded by old buildings, all radiating the aura of a 19th century Bengal, this hotel is a beautiful place to stay and enjoy the charms of the old world. Dark wood furnitures, mirror, marble top table, small plants and creepers around give the place a serenity within the hustle bustle of a busy city. The hospitality is excellent. The staffs are helpful, friendly and courteous.

My husband and I had stayed in Hotel Cecil for one night from 27th March 2019 to 28th March 2019. The location of the hotel is great. It is located in the College Street area just opposite to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Although the size of the room was very small, it was clean. The bathroom was also clean. The complimentary breakfast was good. We will go back to Hotel Cecil again.
